06-2007 : VAMUdeS victorious at the Octas ceremony

VAMUdeS won the Octas in the category "relève étudiante universitaire" at the Octas ceremony held last June 2nd.. Opposed to 2 other groups (one from the  Université de Sherbrooke, the other from the Université Laval), VAMUdeS triumphed, presenting an autonomous aerial vehicule for search and rescue missions.

This ceremony recognises the excellence in the IT domain. The group was awarded a trophee with a 1000$ bursary.

Furthermore, during the same ceremony, the group was nominated in the category "Octas de l'excellence", which is the highest distinction awarded by the "Fédération de l'informatique du Québec". This award is given to an organism or company for their exceptional contribution to the IT domain. Amongst all finalists (over 60 projects), the VAMUdeS project was selected amongst the 4 finalists. Unfortunately, the team did not win, but was prefered to different projects of reknown companies.

05-2007 : VAMUdeS, first in Canada !

VAMUdeS triumphed at the UVS Canada UAV Competition 2006-2007, held in Goose Bay last May. Opposed to 2 other Canadian teams (both from Alberta), the team from Sherbrooke was the only one capable of achieving the proposed mission.

Presenting an autonomous aerial vehicle measuring less than 1 meter, having an autonomy of over 45 minutes with an operating range of over 4 km, the team impressed the jury, with a simple and effective solution to the proposed mission. With their victory, the team was awarded a trophee with a 5000 $ bursary.

04-2007 : Final preparation for UVS Canada UAV Competition 2006-2007

VAMUdeS members are getting prepared for their upcoming competition, the « UVS Canada UAV Competition 2006-2007 » which will be held in Goose Bay, Labrador on May 4th, 2007.

Measuring less than 1 m, the plane developed by VAMUdeS can fly perfectly autonomous on distances over 3 km, recording high precision video sequences. The vehicle developed uses the Paparazzi  autopilot, stabilising the airplane using infrared sensors. An onboard GPS gives the precise location of the vehicle and constant communication with the vehicle  is possible with the help of a high power 1 W modem.

The team is confident it will be able to successfully accomplish the mission, consisting in locating various targets on a 2 km x 2 km area.

11-2006: 4th position at "2nd US-Euro MAV competition"

After an unrestful spring break week making last modifications on the aircraft, VamUdeS team left Quebec for the "2nd US-Euro MAV competition" taking place in Destin, Florida. 28h and 3000km later, the team is on Eglin Air Force Base practicing the mission and fine tuning the prototype. The efforts are well rewarded by a 4th place, behind BYU, ENAC and Martin Mueller.

For this competition, VamUdeS had to present a technical paper, which is now available here.

Next competition: UVS Canada, GooseBay, May 2007.

10-2006: Final preparation for the «2nd US-European Micro Air Vehicle Competition»

The team is currently in final preparation to get the best performance at the competition which will be held in Sandestin, Florida from October 30th to November 2nd

proto0906

The final prototype for that competition offers exceptional flight performances.

-Flight speed of 120 km/h
-Distance up to 1,5 km
-More than 20 minutes of autonomy

All that with an amazing stability and piloting easiness.

The prototype in question is an extremely resistant micro airplane entirely made out of aramid fiber (Kevlar).

For this competition, the prototype will be tele-operated from real time video signal from a micro camera on board, like if the pilot was on board. In order to help the piloting and stabilization, roll and pitch infrared stabilization is also added.

To accomplish to seeking mission, there is a GPS receiver inside the vehicle, it will allow us to know the aircraft relative position to the target we are seeking.

A “sensor” launcher system is also on board to accomplish the part of the mission where we must launch a sensor (paintball) on a ground target.

1st place for VAMUdeS at the UVS Canada Student UAV Competition

Team VAMUdeS got first place at the first Canadian unmanned air vehicle competition. The objective was to produce a technical report presenting the VAMUdeS concept for an autonomous airplane for use in remote Canadian wilderness. The team currently works hard on developing and testing this innovative concept for the 2nd phase of the competition which will occur in May 2007.

Project Advancement

Even if the website has not been updated recently because of technical problems, the team efforts to reach the 2006 objectives have never stopped. The team have the intention to present at the 2nd US-European MAV competition an autonomous MAV prototype which will be very innovative and will push back the limits of everything that have already been done.

UVS Canada

The team has just given their preliminary conception rapport for the phase 1 of the Canadian unmanned air vehicle competition "UVS Canada UAV competition" which will occur in March 2007. The team of the Vamudes project is as motivated as ever the reach its objective of winning that competition.

2nd place for the representants of the University of Sherbrooke at the CEC

David Rancourt and Charles Vidal which were representing the Vamudes project have once again delivered the goods at the Canadian Engineering Competition finishing second in the engineering communication contest. They had earned their place for this competition by winning the Quebec edition sooner this year.

Vamudes project finishes first at Quebec Engineering Competition (QEC)

ghj

Vamudes project's team, represented by Charles Vidal and David Rancourt took the first place in the scientific presentation contest of the Quebec Engineering Competition which was held at McGill University on January 19th to 21st 2006.

The two representents of the Vamudes project did their presentation on aerodynamic applied to micro aerial vehicles. Following that victory, they are going to represent the Vamudes project and the University of Sherbrooke at the Canadian Engineering Competition at the École Polytechnique de Montréal on March 9th to 12th.

New Year for VAMUdeS Team

The team is currently starting working for the competition that will be held on October 2006, in Florida. Organisation, orientation of the project, new aircraft design ideas and strategy are taking most of our time right now.

2nd place at the FEA (aerospace student's forum)

ghj

VAMUdeS project won the second place at the project presentation contest of the aerospace student's forum (FEA) which was held on September 28-29 at the University of Sherbrooke

The contest was a 15 minutes presentation of the student project in front of a group of 3 to 5 judges from companies present at the forum. The judging criteria were:

-Research's quality
-Ability to explain the concepts
-Presentation's quality

Mission accomplished!

jhgj

Everything went perfectly well for the team of the VAMUdeS project in Germany. We can fairly say that our 6th place out of the 17 teams does not reflect how we impressed the judges and the public present with the efficiency and aerodynamic of our aircraft. We won the following categories:

-Smallest aircraft (26,5 cm)

-Lightest aircraft (120 g)

-Best video surveillance

-Best non-autonomous aircraft

-Best flight strategy

-The team who has the most respected his flight plan

Our aircraft particularly impressed by its simplicity and efficiency. Completing the mission was not a difficulty at all thanks to the stability, the control easiness and the quality of the image transmitted by the aircraft.

We were also rewarded of a special mention by the judges just before the handing over of the prizes. They mentioned that the University of Sherbrooke had shown tremendous aerodynamic

Those accomplishments are enhanced by the fact that we were the only team entirely composed our undergraduate students and entirely working by themselves.
